Bit off a worrying time for me at the moment, stressing over housing problems. I left social services on my 18th birthday which was the 28th august. I'm struggling to find a nice flat on this bidding system that the council have now, has any other people used this? I have moved 4 times in the last 6 months im unable to form friendship or settle down somewhere to start to begin my life, I'm always movIng no choice of my own. My social worker went off sick for 6 weeks and I was Practically on my own. I'm now homeless and have to access temp accomdtation when I return from Spain. None of my benefits have been sorted I'm not in no fit state to start work yet,

Ohio Head Start

The Head Start program (for children ages 3-5) and Early Head Start program (for pregnant women, infants and toddlers) promote school readiness for children in low-income families by providing comprehensive educational, health, nutritional, and social services. Parents play a large role in the programs, both as primary educators of their children and as participants in administering the programs locally. Both programs provide pre-literacy and literacy experiences in a multi-cultural environment. Parents are also provided social services, including assistance with childcare. Services are also available to migrant and seasonal farm worker families.

General Program Requirements
In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of the State of Ohio, you must be a parent or primary caregiver responsible for a child who is too young for public school and your household's annual income before taxes must not exceed $10,830 if one person lives in the household; $14,570 if two people live in the household; $18,310 if three people live in the household; $22,050 if four people live in the household; $25,790 if five people live in the household; $29,530 if six people live in the household; $33,270 if seven people live in the household; $37,010 if eight people live in the household; and $40,750 if more than eight people live in the household. For larger households, add $3,740 for each additional person in the home.
If you do not meet these criteria, you may still qualify if you are a U.S. national, citizen or permanent resident whose financial status is low income or very low income, who is under-employed, unemployed or about to become unemployed, facing pregnancy, less than 19 years of age yourself, or the parent or primary caregiver for children under the age of 19 years. Update (as promised) on my circumstances.

Sorry, I haven't been in touch for a while. Here in an update on my circumstances.

I went for an interview at Social Services, and as far as I could tell, applied for everything that was on offer, (with the help of the lady from 'The Grapevine' who helped me with my application). At the interview at Social Services, they more or less just took copies of my cancelled cheques for rent, green card, birth certificates, passports etc..A couple of days later, I got a letter stating that I qualifies for 'Healthy Kids Gold' and foodstamps (food only). This is a great help, but, I still do not have any cash for things like rent and gas to to job interviews.
But, things have looked up in the last couple of weeks - I got offered 2 jobs on the same day, one was travelling over an hour, 7:30 - 5:30 (full time) for $9 per hr, the other part-time 9-3 a half hour away $15 an hr. Weighing every thing up I took the second job. We only have 1 car with 3 of us driving. I start on Monday. I'll see how it goes with the cash - but at least I'm not as anxious as I was a couple of weeks ago.

Best Wishes to all

Employment Opportunities
HOW TO GET A JOB WITH THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES

To be employed by the California Department of Social Services (CDSS), or any other state department, you must first successfully pass an examination which will evaluate your skills and rank you in comparison with other candidates who are applying for the same examination. These state civil service examinations are open to all, regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, marital status, disability, religious or political affiliation, age or sexual orientation. California residency is not required, and U.S. citizenship is required only for peace officer jobs.

If you are successful in the examination, your name will be placed in score order on a list with all other successful candidates. As vacancies occur in the department for that classification, contact letters may be sent to individuals on the list to determine their interest in the position.
THE EXAMINATION PROCESS
FINDING INFORMATION

Examinations are given by the State Personnel Board (SPB) and by individual state departments. Examination announcements tell you which department is giving the examination, and where to apply.

Examination information is available on recorded message lines, on the Internet, and in-person at the SPB, the California Department of Social Services and Employment Development Department (EDD) offices. The recorded messages are available 24 hours-a-day, 7 days per week and are updated when new examinations are announced. The SPB also maintains a bulletin board on the Internet that includes some examination information.

You may also visit the SPB in Sacramento or your local EDD Office for examination announcements and state applications. The SPB also sponsors lunch time seminars on "How to Get a State Job".

The following are the recorded telephone message line resources:
Los Angeles     (213) 620-6450
Sacramento     (916) 445-0538
San Diego     (619) 237-6163
San Francisco     (415) 557-7871
TDD     (916) 445-2689
CDSS Exam Line     (916) 657-1696

APPLYING FOR AN EXAMINATION

Examination Announcements. When you find an examination you want to apply for, get a copy of the announcement and application from the department conducting the examination. Read the announcement carefully, as it provides information on the education and/or experience required for entrance into the examination. You should retain a copy of the examination announcement as well as your completed application so that you may refer back to it during the examination process.

How to Apply. State Examination Applications (Form STD. 678) are available from SPB, EDD and the California Department of Social Services. Answer all the questions that apply to you. Type or print all information in ink neatly. After completing the front of the application, turn the application over and summarize your education and work experience in the spaces provided. Ensure that you place "dates to and from" for each job you have listed, whether the position was full or part-time, and the number of hours worked per week for each of the positions you have listed on the application.

You may attach a resume in place of the education and work history. However, the resume must be attached to an original state application with all of the same information completed (i.e., dates of employment, full or part time). This information is necessary when reviewing the application for minimum qualifications determinations.

Remember, the completed application is an example of your reading comprehension skills, your ability to follow directions, and your attention to detail. Take time to ensure that it is accurate and legible, and that you have followed any special filing instructions indicated on the examination announcement. This is particularly important because in some examinations, you may be disqualified from the examination if you make errors in completing the application.

Prior to submission of your application, you may want to make a copy along with copies of attachments for yourself in case you want to refer to it later. The announcement will tell you where to send your application and the final date you by which you must apply. If it is an examination for which you must apply in person, the announcement will tell you that as well. LATE APPLICATIONS ARE NOT ACCEPTED.

Application Review. Trained examination staff will review your application to determine if you have the education and work experience required for entry into the examination. If you do not meet the minimum requirements, you will receive a letter within approximately two weeks after the final file date. This letter will also provide an opportunity to submit additional information to clarify how you meet the requirements.
PREPARING FOR THE EXAMINATION

Reading the Examination Announcement. Go back to the examination announcement and read the section entitled "Examination Information". It will tell you what type of test will be used and what effect (known as "weight") each component will have on your final score. There are several combinations and variations. Any one or a combination of the types of tests described below may be used. Next, read the "Scope" section carefully; it will tell you what subjects will be covered.

Location of Tests. Written tests are given in a wide variety of locations throughout California. Oral tests are usually given in large metropolitan areas. Candidates are not reimbursed for travel to and from the test sites.

Written Tests. The test date is printed on the examination announcement. These tests typically consist of multiple-choice questions. Six to eight weeks after the test, you will receive a notice telling you whether you passed, but you will not receive a percentage score until all parts of the examination process are completed. If the test is pass/fail only, scores are not computed.

Oral Test/Interview. The oral test may be called "Qualifications Appraisal" or "Promotional Readiness Examination". Before going to the interview, review "The Position" and "Examination Information, Scope" sections on the examination announcement. In your interview, be prepared to tell the panel of two or three people about your education and experience, and how they have prepared you for this classification. You should also be prepared to talk about your career interests and goals. The panel will usually ask some situational questions and may ask for more detail on your background. The panel will have reviewed your application before you come into the room, but you may only be rated on what is discussed during the interview. The application admits you to the examination; it is in the oral interview that you must convince the panel that you can do the job better than the other candidates.

Supplemental Application. Multiple choice or essay questions are mailed out to candidates to be returned before the oral test/interview. They are used to get more details about your education and experience, and provide information for the interview panel. In some cases your entire score will be based on your responses to the Supplemental Application questions.

Education and Experience Evaluation. If the examination announcement states that there may be an Education and Experience Evaluation, it is absolutely critical that you fill out your application as completely and thoroughly as possible. Your score in this type of examination will depend entirely on the information on your application. There will not be a written test or interview.

Physical Ability. For law enforcement and some other classes, physical ability tests are commonly given and are frequently combined with vision and hearing tests. They are usually given just prior to hiring.
EMPLOYMENT LISTS

Test Results. It may take four to six weeks to score each part of the examination and to notify all candidates. If you do not receive your final test results within eight weeks of taking any test, contact the California Department of Social Services or the department conducting the examination.

The Employment List. The names of people who pass all parts of the examination are placed on an employment list. When there are job openings in State civil service, the people are contacted in order of placement on the list by score; that is, those with the highest score are contacted first and so on.

Filing for Vacant Positions. You do not need to wait for a contact letter (Standard Clearance and Waiver Form) to apply for positions. Vacancies are advertised weekly in the CDSS Job Vacancy Bulletin which is prepared by the Department's Equal Employment Opportunity Office. You may file for any job for which you have successfully completed the examination. If your score is reachable on the employment list, you will be considered along with those who have been contacted from the list.

Waiving Positions. You are not obligated to interview for every job or to accept the first job that is offered to you. However, if you waive a total of three contacts or offers, your name will be removed from the open employment list. Also, when you receive a contact letter, it is imperative that you respond, even if you do not wish to be interviewed. If you do not respond, it will be assumed that you are not longer interested in being hired from that list, and your name will be made inactive. To be made active again, you must write to the California Department of Social Services or the department that conducted the examination with a request.
HIRING INTERVIEW

The oral test was general, for an entire class, whereas, the hiring interview is specific to a particular job in a particular department. One class can offer a wide variety of opportunities. Before you go to your interview, acquaint yourself with the mission and functions of the department and how the prospective job contributes. The department has the discretion to hire anyone who is certified to them from an employment list.
PROBATION

When you have been hired, you will serve a probationary period of six months to one year. You will receive three probationary reports by your immediate supervisor, which evaluate your performance, how well you are learning your new job, and identify any problem areas. The report will be discussed with you and reviewed by your supervisor's supervisor. When you have successfully completed your probation, you will be a permanent State employee.

About jen23

My whole life, my goal was to be the first person to graduate college. Even with having a child in my junior year I still was able to make my dream come true.  I worked my way through school to graduate with a BA in Sociology. I was sure after I graduated I would find a career in social services or helping people in need. Was I wrong, 6 months after graduating I am still unemployed, penny less and depressed. I even moved cross country to live with my sister in hopes the job market was better in the east coast.
Every day I grow more weary and even the people closest to me do not know how bad it really is. I don't want a handout I want a career, I want to give back. I get so angry because I know I can do good in this world....

About vidverda

Hello. I graduated at 49 years with a BA and then continued for my MA. as a non-traditional student. Afterwords I did an 3 credit internship thus learning and co-facilitating in a non-profit EMPOWERMENT program sponsored by DSS & DOL at a local Center for Independent Living, I had been offered employment. I was offered a job and thought the experiential education out-weighed a year of tuition. After 8 months I found my self laid off (due to NYS edu. cutbacks) and haven't been able to find work in the past 8 months. I also find that there are no resources available to fund my MA. (HHS, Sociology or Edu. major) unless I accept outrageous interest rates. To go back to the University looks dire in this economic era. I also have a home with other costs of living to support as I would sacrifice potential work hours. At the moment I I haven't been able to find grants, fellowships or other scholarship opportunities in the 4 University community that I live in ( St. Lawrence U., Clarkson U., SUNY Potsdam & SUNY Canton) that could sustain me financially through continuing education. Are my chances of going back to school over with at this time (at 51 there's not a lot of time left) and even with my high grades and have worked a 17 year managerial position, 7 year and a couple of 2 year jobs, I still find it hard to get a job in this economically stresses area that would help me while I went to school PT under outrageous student loan costs.

Dave W.

Post Education Experience:

Through the two month internship I had co-facilitated and taught an 8 week “Empowerment” course to people on public assistance. This also was filmed for a WPBS Film Documentary called “Empowerment!” and showed how our piloted program based on Social Welfare Reform was successful with a 75-90% retention rate working with DSS & DOL. The documentary aired on PBS Monday June 2nd at 9 PM on Mountain Lake PBS (upstate NY). The irony of doing workfare and teaching a unique model that covered self-esteem, conflict resolution communication skills, dealing with legal issues, deviance reform along with mock interviews and resume making was that I spent years earlier surrounded by people in these environments.  I found myself learning a very special program that had a costly under-writing price on it. I also utilized these skills, my education and about 50 years of personal life experience to compliment my work. While growing up with a brother, a person who was mentally challenged and a mother, a person who suffered from tragic past, I gained an empathetic passion and to look at work as people first that have abilities rather than disabilities and can change their lives and the world around them..

The employment responsibilities as a Transition counselor teaching "Independent Living skills" happened in the High School year of 07-08. I worked with four school districts, St. Lawrence-Lewis Co. BOCES, Cornell University in the Model Transitions Program (courses that certified me as a trainer to teach Synergy Rehabilitation in specific courses of disability) which was underwritten by the University at Buffalo amongst the ADA, OMRDD, Center for Autism and other Disability related trainings. There are other certification and trainings that were completed also but the hands on experience working with 11th and 12th graders with learning disabilities (other disorders as well as personal issues) felt rewarding.

Scholarship for Women of Domestic Violence

If you are a victim/survivor of domestic violence and want to continue your education like I did when I first left, please check this out: http://www.wispinc.org/ - it was only created this year and may be too late for me. Whatever happens, do not let social services or abuse shelters tell you you CAN'T do something.  You left your abuser, you should be allowed to do whatever you think will make you the most successful. You are the expert on your life, not social services and not the abuse shelters.  And continue searching for other grants and scholarships.  Also there may be resources for furthering your education in your local community, but you will have to aggressively search and be very assertive in asking for educational assistance.

Hello, I just read Blessd4's page and although its too late for her this Christmas, my family was able to take advantage of Toys for Tots, our counseling facility, and God really came through for us this year in terms of surprise monetary donataions.  I fled a domestic violence situation and received bad advice from the abuse shelters.  I currently share custody of my son with my X. He has been in jail twice but has been allowed to keep his job as a special ed teacher. No one cares. I was a former Wide Area Systems Network Analyst for a large international company.  I have spent 6 years going through agencies- I suffer from PTSD- taking all kinds of medication, feeling sorry for myself and getting absolutely nowhere.  All the agencies want you to go back to work even though you have no self esteem which is absolutely critical to try and find a job in today's market.  I was able to find work as a temp clerk through several agencies in town but that dried up.  My EX sued for custody 3 times for my son and has used all of my mothers retirement savings. I live with my mother. Social Services has adopted the Kurt Vonnegut's Harrison Bergeron model of social services - that is, deliver to the lowest common denominator.  I decided to buck the system and go back to school. That was the best decision I have ever made in 6 years. I made the dean's list and earned a scholarship.  I am attending a community college and earning my AS degree in IT. My self esteem is coming back. I have stopped taking my antidepressants - they only made the depression worse.  I plan on getting my Master's Degree and PhD in computer science.  Social services hates this idea, they want me to say "do you want fries with that" or "Welcome to Walmart" so that I can stop receiving medicaid and food stamps, but receive no benefits and not be able to afford insurance.  I am hopeful that Barack Obama will change the system. If I can offer help or advice to anyone in a similar situation feel free to contact me.

grants

I am looking for financial grants to assist me while completing my graduate degree in business communications with a specialization in influence and leadership.  I have been a professional in the non-for profit social service sector for the past 10 years, while my education leads more towards a corporate position, I am finding it extremely useful in the social service arena.  I am falling behind financially because the position I am in does not pay a generous salary.  I would like to continue my education untill completion of this degree without having to take any time off only due to financial constraints.  I am dedicated to the social services and would not be happy to change professions only because of financial reasons.  I feel I have a lot of character and an excellent work ethic that is beneficial to my chosen career.
